Comic Book Dads

Father’s Day is just around the corner and we can’t help but think of all of the Dads in the comics. Like real dads, stepdads, grandpas and uncles, some are better than others and none are flawless but they all made a difference in the lives of children. So without further fanfare, here’s our list for some of the best father figures in the comics.

Luke Cage had bulletproof skin and superhuman strength but he melted when he and Jessica Jones had a daughter. He named her Danielle (after his best friend Danny Rand, the Iron Fist). He fought off Skrulls to save her and protected her when she turned purple. Luke quit the Avengers multiple times to spend more time with his family but after finding a good nanny in Squirrel Girl, and with urging from Jessica Jones, he always came back.

Superman’s biological father, Jor-El, may not have spent a lot of time with his son, Kal-El, but his influence was immense. Not only did he save his son’s life by launching him to Earth moments before his home planet Krypton exploded but through his holographic recordings and teachings, Jor-El imparted values and lessons that helped shape Superman’s character for years to come.

Based in the town of Smallville, Kansas, Jonathan Kent (Pa) was the first human to encounter the Kryptonian infant, Kal-El. Jonathan trained his adoptive son to use his powers and helped keep his identity a secret by creating the Clark Kent persona. He taught Superman to be optimistic and gave him sound advice. Although his storyline has been changed in many comic continuums, his death at the hand of Braniac unquestionably cemented Superman’s resolve to always live by the principles taught to him by his Pa, Jonathan Kent.

Ben Parker was the brother of Peter Parker’s father, Richard Parker. After Richard and his wife were killed, Ben and his wife Mary took in their nephew and raised him as their own. Similar to other super-heroes and their Dads, Ben had the most impact on his son through his death. After Spiderman chooses not to stop a burglar, and the burglar later kills his Uncle Ben, Spiderman’s moral code is developed. Ben instills in Peter the importance of using his abilities for the greater good with his famous mantra, “With great power comes great responsibility.”

Odin Borson, the King of Asgard, is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe.  Odin is the biological father of Thor and Balder and the adoptive father of Loki.  He has his work cut out for him as his “boys” are bitter enemies and always in trouble of some sort. He is a strict and stubborn father and has often resorted to tough love tactics like when he stripped Thor of his powers and banished him to Earth.  While Odin’s methods don’t really work with Loki and Balder, they do ultimately pay off with Thor as he becomes a worthy heir to the Asgard throne.
